Sago Boulevard

It is time to lay Sago Boulevard to rest. Thank you to all who commented here, debated with me on their blogs, linked to me, and otherwise made my blogging experience enjoyable and stimulating.

Goodbye.

Blogging, My LifeBy David - October 9, 2006 4:13 pm

You may have noticed my recent lack of blogging. It’s difficult for me to keep any kind of regular schedule because of school. The extra time constraints of the holidays didn’t help. I toyed with the idea of calling it quits but I’m not ready to do that just yet. One problem I’ve had with blogging since I started law school is that when I have an idea but I don’t have the time to think about it seriously, I put it off because I like my writing to be thoughtful and polished. When I have more time, though, either I’ve lost interest in the topic or it’s no longer relevant.

I decided to accept the fact that, for the time being, I don’t have time to write detailed, carefully-organized posts. Instead, I’ll write shorter, pithier comments without worrying as much about writing style and thoroughness.

That said, here are a few forthcoming posts: The case for a retributive theory of punishment; Preview of the NHL season; Why William Safire is right about Islamofacism.

Stay tuned.

I’m beginning law school at Fordham. Orientation was this week and classes start on Monday. While I’m excited to get started (anxious too, but more excited), I realize I won’t have nearly as much time to blog as I did last year and over the summer. On one hand, I don’t want to give up on Sago Boulevard. The main reason I started is because I have a lot to say. That hasn’t changed. If anything, law school will give me more things to think about. On the other hand, I only want to blog if I can do it well and blogging well takes time.

So what to do? The short answer is “we’ll see”. Blogging will be sparse for at least a few weeks while I get a handle on the workload. Hopefully, I’ll work out something that resembles a normal schedule and return to regular blogging before long. Stay tuned.

My “about me” page has been updated. Expect a more-thorough expansion in the near future. I find that it’s easier to relate to somebody’s writing, especially bloggers’, if you have at least a general idea of the person’s background and interests.

My wonderfully-reliable computer crashed yesterday. Dell will supposedly send me a new hard drive by Friday, so until then expect erratic blogging.

NYTimes reports:

SAN FRANCISCO, May 26 — A California appeals court ruled Friday that online reporters are protected by the same confidentiality laws that protect traditional journalists…

In its ruling, the appeals court said online and offline journalists are equally protected under the First Amendment. “We can think of no workable test or principle that would distinguish ‘legitimate’ from ‘illegitimate’ news,” the opinion states. “Any attempt by courts to draw such a distinction would imperil a fundamental purpose of the First Amendment.”

The ruling states that Web sites are covered by California’s shield law protecting the confidentiality of journalists’ sources.

The ruling strikes me as correct despite the slippery slope. Yes, not all bloggers qualify as journalists but enough do to justify using the First Amendment to protect them. (via Bitch PhD)

A handful of talented Jewish bloggers are collaborating to promote political debate in good faith. From its maiden post:

Our commitment is to maintain a quality level of analysis and an avoidance of the hit-and-run style of commentary that is the scourge of political blogs. People on the left and the right can agree on at least one thing—political discourse in this country is as polarized as ever. Therefore, we are also committed to maintaining an atmosphere of comity, both amongst each other and towards viewpoints with which we disagree. Hopefully this won’t take the fun out of arguing on the internet that we have all come to love.

Sounds good to me.

I’ve been under the weather for past few days and blogging generally takes a back seat to health (crazy, huh?). But I’m feeling a little better now and hopefully I’ll be back to my old self (and back online) in no time.

Due to a recent influx of comment-spam, all commenters now have to be pre-approved. Basically, once you write one comment and it’s approved, you will be able to leave additional comments without moderation. I’ll try my best to approve comments on a regular basis and I apologize for the inconvenience.

I’ve been in bed with fever for most of last week and, thus, not blogging. I’m happy to report that I’m feeling much better today. I’m still going to bed early as I’m not quite 100% yet but blogging should return to normal soon. Stay tuned.

I still getting comfortable with the WordPress interface so it will take a little while for me to get the things looking right. It’s a bit of a hassle to import my blogger archives so I may just do some favorite old posts manually.

That’s it for now. Change your bookmarks and blogrolls and come back soon.
